Tales From The Sewing Room – TIME • RONE

sewing room

Well, this tale isn’t from our curtain shop sewing room, but instead from Melbourne artist Rone. And it’s yours to interpret as you like ...

I was very excited when I heard that TIME • RONE was coming to Perth. Initially in Melbourne, and one of the highlights of my Melbourne trip last year, the Art Gallery of WA has pulled off a coup and brought the exhibition to Perth.

As Perth's best curtain makers, we are always focused on the tiny details, and therefore can't help but be impressed with the attention to detail by Rone throughout his huge multi-roomed, multi-sensory installation. He provides a snapshot in time and gives visitors an intriguing glimpse into life gone by, and how there is a beauty in decay.

Below is a map of the all the rooms over two levels, but naturally it was the sewing room (The Workroom) which occupied most of my time. Although unfortunately it was a sewing room which made garments and not curtains though ;)

The authenticity was remarkable. I have no idea how Rone knew so much, but he managed to reproduce a functional sewing room with rolls of fabrics, cutting utensils, authentic cutting tables, then age it as if all the people just left 50 years ago.

Every room, and even the corridors, deserved time to explore all the carefully thought out details.

one typist had been writing a letter of appreciation to Sarah Miller from the sewing room, and it illustrates the detail which Rone went to when creating this exhibition. It also made me think of my senior curtain maker Kaye who is truly committed to sewing exceptional quality curtains and blinds every single day.

The letter reads,

“I wanted to take a moment to commend you for your dedication and hard work in the sewing room.

Your attention to detail and commitment to quality are truly commendable, and I appreciate all that you do to contribute to the success of our team.

Please know that your efforts do not go unnoticed, and I am confident that you will continue to excel in your role here at ATG.

Keep up the excellent work, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need anything.

Thank you for your continued dedication”

I definitely recommend everyone try and get to see this exhibition whilst we have it in Perth. And to ensure you have enough time to fully appreciate it. A little tip is to check out the large visitors book on the way out, and read some of the insightful thoughts and comments on how the exhibition impacted previous visitors.
